Background of the Study
Anxiety is a common psychological response to the pressures of nursing education. Clinical performance, a crucial aspect of nursing training, can be particularly stressful for students, as they must integrate theoretical knowledge into practice under real-life conditions. The intensity of clinical settings can evoke feelings of anxiety, which can affect students’ performance in patient care, clinical decision-making, and interpersonal interactions (Ogbonna et al., 2023). Anxiety in nursing students is often linked to fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, and overwhelming expectations from both instructors and patients.
Federal University, Dutse, like many other institutions, provides rigorous clinical training where students are expected to demonstrate their competence in diverse clinical environments. However, the anxiety experienced by nursing students in these settings has not been thoroughly studied in this institution. Research indicates that high levels of anxiety can impair cognitive functioning, decision-making, and communication, all of which are vital skills for nursing professionals (Akinmoladun et al., 2024). This study seeks to explore the effect of anxiety on nursing students' clinical performance at Federal University, Dutse, and to determine whether anxiety levels correlate with reduced clinical competence.
Statement of the Problem
Nursing students at Federal University, Dutse, experience significant anxiety during clinical training, which may impact their performance in delivering patient care and performing clinical tasks. While some anxiety may be a normal part of the educational process, excessive anxiety can negatively affect students’ ability to function effectively in clinical settings. This study aims to investigate the relationship between anxiety and clinical performance in nursing students.
